The Science of Micro-Perforation

Sub-millimetre holes, engineered geometry and controlled air cavities — acoustic absorption tuned by physics, not by fibre.

What is MPP Technology?

Metallic Absorbers That Tune to the Noise

Micro-Perforated Panels are metallic sound absorbers containing precisely engineered micro-holes (sub-millimetre perforations), backed by controlled air cavities or honeycomb cores. The principle traces to Ma Dayou’s theory of micro-perforated absorbers.

Sound energy is dissipated through:

  • Viscous losses as air oscillates inside the micro-perforations
  • Resonance within the backing cavity or honeycomb core

The result is stable, broadband absorption with no fibre, foam or binder — our own geometry places roughly 300,000 sub-millimetre holes per square metre.

Tune Absorption by Geometry

MPP systems work on Helmholtz resonance and transfer impedance theory, letting designers target specific frequencies by controlling three variables.

Hole Diameter

Sub-millimetre perforations — e.g. 0.25 × 0.040 mm — set the viscous resistance that converts sound to heat.

Pitch & Open Area

A controlled open area of around 0.33% balances resistance and reactance for broadband absorption.

Cavity Depth

Backing depths of 50 mm or 100 mm shift the resonance to target low- or mid-frequency noise.
